Temperatures will remain high until the end of the week the meteorological service said on Tuesday, coupled with rising humidity to add to the discomfort.
“We have meteorological data until Saturday and it seems that there will not be any change until then” said Met service officer Panayiotis Mouskos.
Temperatures will remain in the 40s while humidity will rise on Tuesday to add to the misery.
At around 9.30am, humidity was at 45 per cent in the capital Nicosia and 60 per cent in Larnaca, on the south coast.
Mouskos said that during previous summer seasons temperatures had been as high as 42 and 43 degrees for seven consecutive days.
He said temperatures “broke a previous record of 46 degrees, reaching 46.6 which was officially recorded as 47 degrees in the Summer of 2012”.
Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary exposure, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly and individuals with health problems.
Nicosia municipality announced that it has opened the municipal centre for use by the public during the heatwave.
The centre, located on Famagusta Gate, in the former nursing home, is staffed and cool beverages are on offer.
It is open between 7.30am and 6pm.
