Levels of dust in the atmosphere in both Paphos and Limassol are high and are expected to last the duration of the day, according to the Met service

“Today there are higher levels of dust being experienced in Paphos and Limassol. There may be visible dust at some higher levels, but we don’t expect it to spread to other areas, remaining mainly in the west,” a spokesman told the Cyprus Mail.

In both Paphos and Limassol pollutant levels are high, rated at 3.

Due to the small size of the particles and the negative effect on health, authorities are advising vulnerable groups such as, children, the elderly and patients to avoid going outside and exercising in open spaces while levels are high.

According to the Met service spokesman, the dust, which is from Africa, will remain in the affected areas until Friday evening when it will be cleared by rain.

Scattered rains are also expected during the weekend, while it will be mostly clear on Monday.

Due to a weak low-pressure system in the area clouds are expected to form during the day on Friday and in the afternoon, rain may fall, especially in the west, north, and the mountains.

Temperatures will rise to around 17C inland and in coastal areas and 7C in the Troodos region.

For the evening local rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected with the possibility of snow on the highest mountain peaks.

The Met service predicts frost and a drop to 2C in the mountains, a fall to 10C inland and on the west coast, and 12C in other coastal areas.

It will be much the same on Saturday though slightly cooler.

On Sunday, more rain is expected in the morning but later on, temperatures will rise and it will stop raining.

On Green Monday, temperatures will remain at the same levels and apart from some transient clouds, sunny weather will prevail.
