Every effort is being made to help the residents of Ayios Trimithias and Paliometocho who were affected by a whirlwind that caused huge damage on Sunday afternoon, Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides said after visiting the area on Monday.
According to reports the whirlwind was as high as 200 metres and cut through mainly Ayios Trimithias, damaging everything in its path. There were no reports of injuries but electricity lines were cut by falling trees and homes were badly damaged.
Petrides assured the residents that repairs will be made at the earliest possible time in cooperation with other services.
Arrangements for temporary hotel accommodation were made by the civil defence for those who were unable to stay in their homes.
The interior ministry has started to record and assess the damages and will decide on financial and other compensation on Monday.
