A 40-year-old man detained in connection with the murder of a woman, 56, in the village of Ikos had blood spatter on his clothes, police told a court on Tuesday.
The Georgian man, who was remanded in custody for eight days, was arrested after Yiannoula Hadjiyianni was found stabbed to death in her car at around 1.15pm on Monday.
He appeared in court without a lawyer but with an interpreter and requested legal aid. The suspect denied any involvement in the case. He told the court he works as a builder and has three children and a wife in Georgia.
Police said they found blood on his clothes and in the bathroom of his house. The man was also found in possession of a large sum of cash that he could not justify.
The court heard that he had been seen in the victim’s car before the murder. Police said they have also recovered a pocketknife from the front passenger seat, which they believe had been used to stab Hadjiyianni multiple times.
Police told the court the suspect had undergone a medical examination after his arrest and abrasions were found on his hands.
In the bathroom of his flat in nearby Kalopanayiotis officers found what appeared to be blood drops on the wall, police said. Spots resembling blood were also found on the money he was carrying.
Hadjiyianni worked at a grocery store in Kalopanayiotis. Reports on Monday suggested the killer had hitched a ride with the woman with the aim of robbing her of takings from the shop.
Police said they were trying to determine whether the cash found in his possession were the proceeds of the grocery store or if it can be justified by his wages.
