Only a healthy dialogue on the Cyprus problem would make settlement possible, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Thursday following a meeting with UN envoy Jane Holl Lute in Ankara.

In a tweet accompanied by a photo of the meeting, Cavusoglu said he had stressed to Lute “that only a healthy dialogue where everybody talks to one another will make a settlement possible in Cyprus.”

On Wednesday, the UN official met with Greece’s Alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos in New York.

Katrougalos said afterwards that the outdated system of guarantees in Cyprus can no longer be maintained.

He said he had reiterated Greece’s commitment to solving the Cyprus problem, based on UN decisions.

“And I repeated the well-known positions that the international aspect of the Cyprus problem cannot but take into account the progress achieved in Crans Montana and was imprinted in the so-called Guterres Framework,” Katrougalos said.

The meeting lasted more than an hour. Lute departed without making any statements.

Lute is expected to arrive in Cyprus on the weekend.
