A group of migrants found on land at Cape Arnaoutis in the Akamas peninsula on Tuesday have been given medical checks and humanitarian aid, a police spokesman said.

Authorities were alerted shortly after noon that around 25 people had arrived by boat at Cyprus’ western-most tip.

The Joint Search and Rescue Centre organised a search and 24 migrants – eight men, five women, and 11 children – were found in the area.

Police are investigating illegal entry into the Republic of Cyprus.

The migrants were taken to the Polis Chrysochous police station.

Paphos CID spokesman Michalis Ioannou said the 24 were granted medical and humanitarian aid.

Police said they left Mersin, Turkey on Monday night.

One child, he said, appeared to have an ear problem, while a pregnant woman required medical care.

One of the migrants, a 41-year-old Syrian man, was arrested on suspicion of people smuggling.

Two others were found to have been deported from Cyprus in the past and were also detained.

The remaining 20 migrants were taken to the Kokkinotrimithia reception centre, where the migrants will be temporarily stationed.

Meanwhile, 13 people thought to have crossed into the Republic from the north illegally were picked up by police after a tip off at around 4am on Tuesday near the Nicosia industrial area to the capital’s east.

The area is not far from the buffer zone.

According to a police statement they were taken to the Omorfita police station for further investigations.

A police spokesperson said the 13 are Syrians, and two, who were found to have been in Cyprus illegally as they had been deported in the past, were arrested and detained.
